Did this solve your problem? Yes No. Sorry this didn't help. I have to take back my previous post based on last evenings tests that the problem was solved. This morning I find that the print spooler service is not running again. Getting same issues as before - also I find some strange errors showing in event viewer not related to printing.
I had 4 computers in the past two days that had this issue. What I had to do was delete all the printers, this will get your print spool to stay running, and then re-install the printers back.
Hello, we are experiencing the same issue. We have tried all the suggested resolves but nothing has worked. The problem seemed to go away when I took the advice about deleting all printers. Actually I decided to delete them one by one and see if there was any impact on the problem. In doing so, I found one printer had multiple definitions - appeared multiple times in the list of printers - even though I thought I had removed it long ago. I tried to remove the first duplicate and could not - then tried the second and was able to remove that definition.
I went back and retried the definition I had tried first and this it was removed. On reboot the PrintSpooler started and kept running. So problem seemed to be solved again. None of what I found and did made much sense so I decided to wait before posting this reply, to see if the definitions came back or the problem returned. I had a bunch of Windows updates yesterday and after they were installed printing problem showed up again.
Checked and PrintSpooler was not running.Users are complaining that sometimes they are unable to print usually on HP and Ricoh printers. Printer status shows "Error-printing". We have to restart print spooler or restart the printer itself. Error occurs when they access Citrix and print from the published application.

As a rule, these programs are installed on print servers and most of them are not cheap. However, you can track printer usage without any third-party software by analyzing Windows events of Print Spooler. And use of Event Log Explorer makes this process much better. If you run Windows or Windows 8, you may need to apply a Windows update as described here.
The most interesting event for printer usage tracking is event document was printed. If you open event details of this event and switch to XML representation, you will get detailed information about printing. Param1 is a print job identifier and can be used to link with other events in this log. Param3 and Param4 define document owner and computer from which the document was sent to print. Param5 is a printer name. Param6 is a name of the print server port.
Param7 is a document size in bytes sent to print server. Param8 is a total number of pages printed by this print job. I will add a printer user a document ownerprinter name, and number of pages as event list columns. Now we should add custom columns. Now you can run Analytical Report and select Custom Column1 stats. This will summarize user print sessions and let you detect users who print a lot.
Select Excel document as a target format, make sure that All events is selected as export scope and tick fields Printer User, Printer and Pages. You can untick other fields. I have 70 workstations and about 20 network printers. I have no idea at this point which of the PC's on the network or which printer is causing the problem. All I do know is that when it does happen, everyone cries out and when it happens 20 tmes in a day people get frustrated.
First thing to do is go to services. Right click on print spooler and go to properties. Go to the recovery tab and set subsequent failures to restart the service. This is not a fix, just a band-aid until you figure out which print driver is causing the problem. Hi Coalnine, I did notice this option and aIso noticed it was set to first fail - restart, second fail - restart and the subsequent failures -do not restart.
