There are so many renderers available out there, and how does an artist know what to choose? Essentially, renderers really do the same thing. However, they work differently will give different results. Below is a breakdown of what the different renderers offer, not reviews, so you can decide which renderer is right for you.

This article is difficult to put together, and as a result, there is a lot of information to digest. Indeed, I hope this will be a highly used resource. My goal was to create a document to help artists decide which renderer is best for their work while presenting only facts… no opinion… so that users can compare. This comes with a lot of terminologies of which you must have a basic understanding.

I was thinking that If redshift is really that good, maybe I can sell most of my team render PC and just invest in more GPUs, so here we go.

So let's take a look at the next comparison. Oh and I removed some of the Redshift watermarks to avoid image attachment limit. Wow, I didn't expect Redshift to be this good. Where you will see a huge difference in speed is if you test an indoor scene like in a room only lit by sun light coming in though a window. Arnold is well know for not being able to do secondary bounces of GI very well.

Even the creator says this. It's not bad if you never run into that situation where you need secondary GI bounces. I'd test a fully textured indoor scene only lit by sun coming though a window and see what you get. If you want to make a test scene to let others take a bash at here they might be able to get better quality with redshift with shorter render times.

V-Ray Next: Smarter rendering with the New Adaptive Dome Light

I'm not saying I would do it, but there are a lot of fans of redshift here. Cycles might even get thrown in there. There are some scenes here if you would like to throw them in arnold and see what times you get I think it would be interesting to have another render engine thrown in. Though the big thing I have with Arnold is their render farm license makes it more expensive to do any rendering with them on a farm.

Even for a local in house farm it can be a lot. Supposedly Arnold GPU is real and might be released soon. They've been talking about it and releasing teases for well over a year and I have to wonder if this is just around the corner. My Support Cases.Last week I wrote about Working with Arnold Shaders in Maya and talk a bit about how mental ray was discontinued in this version. This article expands on that. I'm not advanced enough yet in Maya to just figure it out on my own, but with a few Google searches, I realized that mental ray was no longer available and I found a work around with Arnold.

The problem was that the tutorial used a MIA material. I was making a green glass bottle and learned how to do the same effect with Arnold. Not a big deal in the grand scheme. However, I had another solution that I could have made happen instead. I could have installed mental ray. I'm glad that I chose to figure it out in Arnold, since it's the direction that Autodesk has taken Maya, however, I just want you to know that you do have another option. Customers who need to scale their rendering will be able to choose the renderer that best supports their needs, whether it is mental-ray, Arnold V-Ray, Renderman, Octane, Redshift or another third party renderer.

Arnold Renderer was first conceived in Then called RenderAPI by Marcos Fajardo who wanted to build a render engine that used ray tracing to calculate the final results. With this you can visualise how certain textures and lighting will interact together in your final render without having to wait hours to see the results. But has come a long way in that short amount of time and quickly has become regarded as a professional level engine used by many studios.

V-Ray boasts the strongest pedigree of any render engine on this list, with almost any 3D artist being able to tell you what it is. In fact, many of our users have discovered that their old scenes typically render faster and cleaner, simply by removing their previous settings and switching to the new defaults. In the same way that machine learning makes choices based on what is learned about a specific problem, V-Ray has been adopting learning techniques for analyzing a scene as it is rendering.

V-Ray's analysis results in a faster, cleaner render. For example, with the introduction of Variance-based Adaptive Sampling we eliminated the need to set individual subdivisions on materials and lights, or even camera effects like depth of field. This makes it possible for users to render scenes with a large number of light sources, without affecting render times. Also, a new improved Adaptive Lights 2 technique is coming in our next release more on that later.

A dome light is a spherical or hemispherical light that is often paired with a high dynamic range image HDRI of the environment. This type of image-based environment lighting has been a staple in CG rendering for years. Although image-based lighting has improved over the years, it still involves a lot of sampling, especially for interior scenes. However light typically enters interior spaces through small openings like windows and doors and only a small portion of the dome light actually contributes to the image, making the sampling of the dome light with HDR image not very efficient.

As a workaround, you could add Skylight Portals near openings like doors, windows, and skylights that help direct light samples. To avoid this problem, we built a smarter dome light based on a similar concept as Adaptive Lights. Now, the new Adaptive Dome Light uses the Light Cache calculation phase to learn which parts of the dome light are most likely to affect the scene.

It automatically figures out which portions of the environment to sample and which ones to ignore. This makes it much easier to set up and much more efficient. This is because the Adaptive Dome Light concentrates its efforts in the right spots making it not only more accurate, but faster as well. In some scenes you might not notice a difference in the lighting, but in scenes such as this, the difference is easy to spot.

Many factors can affect the overall speed gains that this feature can give you. Here are a few examples of different types of HDRIs and scene types.
